Tigers & Teddies Live! Transforming Criminal Justice

By No Comments

Join us for the next on-line event in our summer series Tigers & Teddies Live! It will be chaired by Gary Robinson, wearing another of his famous bow ties.  This week casts a light on the power of kindness.  As those of you who have been joining us every week know, the series came out of the interest in our new book ‘Sabre Tooth Tigers and Teddy Bears’, published in May 2020 and authored by Dr. Suzanne Zeedyk.

In this episode, we’ll meet two of the people whose stories are told in the book:  Kevin Neary and Iain Smith.  Kevin’s story traces the consequences of a childhood filled with chaos, fear and misunderstanding by adults.  We hear how behaviour policies at school, accompanied by exclusion and rejection, helped to create a future that found Kevin in prison.  Iain’s story offers us an alternative perspective: a defence lawyer who comes to understand that he has not been curious enough about the painful childhoods of his clients.  We hear in both these stories how discovering the science of trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) changed their perspectives about the leadership they could offer to the criminal justice system and beyond.

Together, Kevin and Iain’s stories push us to think about how kindness transforms children’s lives and children’s futures.  This promises to be a conversation you will not forget.
