Join us for the next on-line event in our summer series Tigers & Teddies Live! It will be chaired by Gary Robinson, wearing another of his famous bow ties. This week offers a fascinating and unusual opportunity, as suggested by its novel title: Getting Rid of Jargon.
We’ll meet Dr Jessica Taylor who has built a reputation on making the language of academic theory accessible to the public. Her recent book, ‘Why Women are Blamed for Everything’ drew criticism for being ‘too accessible’. She responded in the forthright style for which she has become known: “That’s the f-ing point.” She believes that if contemporary society can find new ways to talk about victim blaming, then we will be better placed to fight it.
Dr Taylor will be in conversation with Dr. Suzanne Zeedyk, author of the book that sparked the series, ‘Sabre Tooth Tigers & Teddy Bears: The connected baby guide to attachment’. Suzanne’s work intersects with Jessica’s because both have reflected on the ways that power and status are woven into language. They are both frustrated by this because it prevents important ideas from reaching the wider public. They have each embraced and promoted language that takes understanding beyond the academic or scientific walls within which it has often been confined. They will share stories of their journeys and compare notes on what they have learned.
This should make for a memorable conversation! We look forward to welcoming many of you to join in.
