Leadership for Resilience – Putting ACEs Awareness into Action
Thousands of people across Scotland saw the film Resilience during 2017. The film explores the insights science is gaining about the long-term impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences. This growing awareness leaves us all with the question:
What do we do with this knowledge?
How we put the insights into action is what we’ll explore during this event.
The event consists of two parts. Firstly, you’ll have a chance to see the film Resilience. The film makes clear the hidden struggles that many children face – challenges that adults often simply do not see. If Scotland is to succeed in our wish to be ‘best place to grow up’, we need to get better at identifying and responding to those struggles. We need to understand how they affect children’s biology for the long term.
That’s where the second part of the event comes in. We’ll have an extended discussion about how to act on this knowledge. The discussion will be led by two of the people working hard to bring about change in Scotland. Research scientist Suzanne Zeedyk will share insights from the work she has been pursuing directly with schools seeking to embed ACEs awareness in their practice. David Cameron will draw on his wide policy experience in education and children’s services to reflect on the barriers that keep us from putting care at the centre of educational practice.
David Cameron and Dr Suzanne Zeedyk
This event is a great opportunity to think in depth about how we can bring about the changes we want to see for Scotland’s children. It will focus not only on raising awareness of ACEs, but also on identifying solutions.
Anyone working with or caring for children and young people will find useful insights at this event.

Making Scotland the World’s First ACE- Aware Nation
We are delighted to announce that we will be co-hosting a national conference in 2018, in partnership with TIGERS Ltd.
Making Scotland the World’s First ACE-Aware Nation will help to boost the active conversations our country is now having about how to put the science of trauma and relationships at the heart of all our policies and practices.
How do we put connection at the heart of absolutely everything we do in Scotland? And how do we get this information to every single citizen of our country? These are the questions we’ll be asking in this national event, with seats available for more than 1000 of us.
Best news of all? Guess who is coming to help us think about creating that future? Dr Nadine Burke Harris! She’s gained an international reputation for her transformational work as founder of the Center for Youth Wellness, in San Francisco. Most Scots are likely to know her from her central role in the documentary Resilience, which has taken Scotland by storm in 2017.

The Divided Brain
The next film due to be screened by connected baby is The Divided Brain. This is the documentary inspired by the mind-altering book ‘The Master and his Emissary’, written by neuroscientist Iain McGilchrist. The film helps us get to grips with McGilchrist’s theory about how modern life is changing the way human brains function – and how that has gone on to change our very society.
The film features interviews with actor John Cleese of Monty Python fame, neuroanatomist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor of TED Talks fame, pioneering neuroscientist Dr. Michael Gazzaniga, former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, and Aboriginal elder Dr. Leroy Little Bear. Our team at connected baby is keen to bring this film to the UK public, just as soon as the production team releases it later in 2017.
